Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) Training

The Crisis Prevention Institute's Nonviolent Crisis Intervention (NCI) certification program is designed to provide participants with the knowledge and skills required to respond early and effectively to prevent or defuse a behavioral escalation.  Participants will learn a range of preventative strategies, de-escalation skills, communication skills, and both restrictive and non-restrictive interventions to reduce the risk of injury and maintain the student's dignity.

The Santa Clarita Valley SELPA offers the following NCI training options for employees of our member school districts:
  • Complete NCI Course: In this two-day course, you will learn to respond to various levels of crisis behavior by recognizing how to manage your own reactions and behavior in order to influence a positive outcome.  Develop limit-setting strategies and strengthen nonverbal communication skills.  Explore the Physical Skills Review Framework and practice both non-restrictive and restrictive physical interventions to ensure a safe resolution.
  • Refresher Course: This half-day course is for those who wish to renew their NCI certification before it expires and have completed the 2-Day NCI Complete Course during the 24-25 school year.

Also offered is the 1-Day Verbal De-escalation Course based on the principles of NCI training.  This one-day course offers training in how to respond to various levels of crisis behavior by managing your own reactions in order to influence a positive outcome.  Develop limit-setting strategies and strengthen verbal and nonverbal communication skills.  This course does not cover physical interventions and does not provide NCI certification.
