The Diagnostic Center of Southern California invites you to explore The Essential 10. Behavior intervention plans (BIPs) are often developed for students with IEPs exhibiting challenging behavior. However, just because a BIP is developed does not necessarily lead to improved outcomes, and reduction of challenging behaviors. The Essential 10 scoring rubric was developed to support educators in writing BIPs which are rooted in the science of behavior analysis, contain elements which are shown through research to be best practice, and to satisfy legal requirements of a behavior intervention plan. This training is intended to guide those developing BIPs, by providing a rubric to score plans and to identify
areas of weaknesses which could lead to an ineffective plan. The Essential 10 use is to ensure the quality of BIPs in achieving its intended outcomes.
