From Functional Behavior Assessment (FBA) to Follow Through: Developing Sustainable Behavior Intervention Plans (BIPs) for Escape- and Access-Maintained Behaviors
When a student's behavior is working for them, whether to escape a demand or gain access to something they want, our long-term goal is rarely to just make the behavior stop. It is to teach a better way to meet the same needs and to make sure our intervention actually gets implemented when we walk out of the room. This training covers the research and application of differential reinforcement of alternative behavior (DRA) for both escape-maintained and access-maintained behaviors. Case studies bring the research to life and model function-based decision making. The day then shifts into a hands-on session where participants will apply components of the PENT Essential 10 to their own cases with modeling, guided practice, and individualized feedback. Participants will leave with tools to write function-based BIPs for their own cases and practical strategies for building the staff and caregiver buy-in that makes interventions stick.
Participants Will...

  1. Apply current research on DRA to identify function and design appropriate interventions for escape-maintained and access-maintained behaviors.
  2. Use the PENT Essential 10 to develop function-based BIP components for their own cases with modeling, guided practice, and feedback.
  3. Identify barriers to implementation and apply strategies to secure staff and caregiver buy-in across settings.
